Watford FC Welcomes Back Moussa Sissoko on a Two-Year Contract

In a significant move for Watford FC, Moussa Sissoko has re-joined the club on a two-year contract from French side Nantes. The deal, now finalized, sees the return of the versatile midfielder to Vicarage Road, where he previously played during the 2021-2022 season.

A Storied Career

Moussa Sissoko, born on August 16, 1989, is a French professional footballer known for his robust box-to-box midfield presence. Capable of playing in various roles—including holding midfield, attacking midfield, right winger, and even right-back—Sissoko brings a wealth of experience and versatility to Watford’s squad.

Sissoko began his career in the Île-de-France region, playing for local youth clubs such as Espérance Aulnay and Red Star, before moving to Toulouse in 2002. He made his professional debut in the 2007-08 season and quickly established himself, helping Toulouse qualify for the UEFA Europa League and earning award nominations for his performances.

In January 2013, Sissoko transferred to Newcastle United for €2.5 million, where he continued to build his reputation. Following Newcastle’s relegation, he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2016 for €35 million. At Tottenham, Sissoko reached the 2019 UEFA Champions League final and finished as runner-up in the 2016-17 Premier League season.

After leaving Tottenham in 2021, Sissoko joined Watford for a season before moving to Nantes in 2022 for €2 million. At Nantes, he made 26 appearances in the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season, contributing significantly to the team’s midfield, and played a role in the Coupe de France and UEFA Europa League campaigns.

International Prowess

Sissoko has also been a fixture in the French national team setup, playing at all youth levels before making his senior debut in August 2009. He was part of the France squad that finished as runners-up in UEFA Euro 2016, showcasing his talent on the international stage.

Watford’s Gain

Watford, currently gearing up for the upcoming Championship season, will undoubtedly benefit from Sissoko’s experience and leadership. The club, which has been active in the transfer market recently, will look to Sissoko to add depth and stability to their midfield.

Watford’s squad, featuring players like goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann, defenders Wesley Hoedt and Francisco Sierralta, and midfielders Imran Louza and Ken Sema, is set to be bolstered by Sissoko’s returning presence. The team aims to improve on their previous seasons and make a strong push for promotion.

Looking Ahead

Watford will kick off their Championship campaign on August 10 against Millwall, and fans will be eager to see Sissoko in action. With his return, Watford hopes to leverage his experience and skill to navigate the challenges of the season and aim for a return to the Premier League.

This transfer marks an exciting chapter for both Sissoko and Watford, as the midfielder returns to familiar territory, ready to make an impact once again.
